In 2008, Marvel Studios released Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr. While the film was both a critical and commercial triumph, it is now celebrated more for launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the largest cohesive cinematic storyline in history. Since then, the MCU has become a cornerstone of modern commercial cinema. Despite a recent decline in numbers, it continues to perform well.
The mastermind behind this monumental project is producer Kevin Feige. His creative vision and leadership have been instrumental in shaping the MCU, defining the modern superhero movie genre, and making his perspective highly influential.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Kevin Feige addressed pressing questions about the upcoming Comic-Con and the soon-to-be-released ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ movie, which has the potential to usher the MCU into a new era.
In a recent exclusive interview with Deadline, Kevin Feige addressed several pertinent questions regarding ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ including how the film might usher in a new era of edgier, R-rated Marvel movies. Feige’s excitement about this new direction was evident throughout the discussion.
DEADLINE: With Deadpool & Wolverine, is this the beginning of an edgier era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
FEIGE: I think we’ve been edgy in the past, but my favorite thing is that we span all types of genres and tones. I think it gets a lot of attention that this is our first R-rated movie, but it is the third R-rated Deadpool movie, so we wanted to stay true to what Ryan has built over those last couple of movies and we weren’t going to undo that. I will say — Hugh and Ryan have talked about this — and I think people can tell from the trailer and from the press tour so far, yes, it’s R-rated, yes there’s some language and blood, but the film is incredibly emotional.
I keep calling it the most wholesome R-rated film that anybody can ever see. It really is a celebration of friendship and family and of found family. I don’t want to overdo it, but for all the R-rated raunchiness that gets attention, when people see the movie, it’s going to be about how heartfelt it is — in my opinion, much more than the first two Deadpool films. That’s what I’m really excited about, once people get past the ‘F’ words and the R-rating, to see how sweet it is.

We all knew Deadpool had to be R-rated; anything else wouldn’t make sense. However, it appears this is just the beginning of a new era for the MCU. Kevin Feige recently confirmed that the upcoming Blade movie will also be R-rated, which is certainly exciting news. If Marvel continues to take these bold steps, it could signify a fresh direction for fans and potentially revitalize interest in the franchise.
