This year’s SDCC has been full of surprises. We learned that the next ‘Avengers’ installment is being retitled as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ with Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role of Doctor Doom. The MCU is seemingly moving away from Kang the Conqueror as the main villain of the Multiverse Saga and focusing on a threat far more sinister than we could imagine – Victor von Doom.
Following the conclusion of ‘Endgame’ fans were afraid that the MCU wouldn’t be able to introduce a villain as powerful or sinister as Thanos. But we have good evidence in the comics that Doom can be far more dangerous than Thanos ever was.
In ‘Secret Wars #8’ (2015) we’ve seen what Doctor Doom is capable of, but before we progress to what actually took place, we need to clear up some things. Doom in ‘Secret Wars’ is not your regular version of Doom, he is God-Emperor Doom by the power of Beyonders which he stole.
Following the conclusion of the ‘Time Runs Out’ storyline, one big incursion managed to destroy reality as we know it. Doctor Doom used the power of Beyonders to create one reality from remnants of former destroyed realities and he named it Battleworld. He ruled as God Emperor Doom with Sheriff Stephen Strange as his right hand and the Foundation as his left hand.
The Battleworld was a relatively calm place but Doom was never quite pleased with it and considered himself to be the biggest flaw of this realm. However a series of discoveries will eventually lead the inhabitants of the place to realize the true origin of both Doom and Battleworld, and a series of insurrections happened to which Doom struck out viciously and cruelly.
Doom found one unlikely enemy in Thanos, who worked to get rid of Doom. Doom offered him the opportunity to keep his horde and his “lands” in exchange for stopping the attacks against him and ceasing all attempts to dethrone God-Emperor.
Thanos was insulted by Doom’s offering, claiming that he himself was a god at one point, reminding Doom that he used to wore Infinity Gauntlet, handling all its power. He called Doom a false god and a pretender and offered him a chance to bow to him.
Doom reminded him that he no longer had the Gauntlet and literally tore his skeleton from his body, leaving Thanos a tangled, massacred, and utterly dead mess.
It’s one of the shortest fights in the story really, since Thanos never expected for Doom to retaliate so viciously and quickly.
It’s one very interesting fight and proves how terribly final and ultimate the power of Beyonders is. It’s also one storyline we hope will be adapted in ‘Secret Wars,’ since seeing Doctor Doom in the MCU humiliating Thanos variant would settle all debates regarding Thanos’ status as unquestionably the strongest villain we can possibly see in the MCU.
