Do you remember when Sony’s Madame Web hit theaters earlier this year? It might feel like ages ago, but Sony’s female-led Spider-Man spin-off, intended to kick off a new movie series, struggled both at the box office and with critics. Although it grossed $100 million, it fell short of breaking even. On the bright side, the film found unexpected success on streaming platforms, as we reported earlier.
Streaming success can sometimes breathe new life into a film’s prospects. Given Madame Web’s dedicated fanbase, many are curious if a sequel might be on the horizon. Despite the interest from fans, there have been no updates about a potential follow-up.
According to reports from some of our colleagues on social media, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura seems similarly pessimistic about the prospects of a sequel. His comments suggest that there’s no concrete information about a follow-up being developed, indicating that the news might not be promising.
We’ve got some news from Twitter, where our colleagues are quoting producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura as saying:
Take this with a pinch of skepticism, but it’s important to note that the film didn’t perform well financially and failed to win over audiences. While it found success as a streaming hit and has a dedicated fanbase, that alone is often insufficient for a major studio to greenlight a sequel. The situation doesn’t look promising at the moment, though a sequel hasn’t been completely ruled out, so there’s still a glimmer of hope for fans.
Just a quick recap: Madame Web focuses on the titular character from the Spider-Man universe and features an all-female lead cast, including Dakota Johnson in the title role, along with Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor. Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott also appeared. Despite its streaming success, the film was disappointing at the box office and received largely negative reviews from both fans and critics.
With a dismal rating of just 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, Madame Web received the following critique: “The film’s sincere attempt to explore the title character’s origin story has some charm, but its predictable plot and inconsistent execution result in a forgettable superhero adventure.” The audience score was slightly higher at 57%, with viewers noting, “While Madame Web isn’t a revolutionary superhero film, it offers a reasonably entertaining origin story.”
If you’re curious about the movie, here’s a brief plot overview:
In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who develops the power to see the future… and realizes she can use that insight to change it. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women bound for powerful destinies…if they can all survive a deadly present.
Released on Netflix in May, the film has been drawing an increasing number of viewers since then. Have you watched it, either in theaters or at home on Netflix? Are you interested in seeing a sequel? Share your thoughts and answers in the comments below!
