If you’ve missed MCU drama in the last couple of days, you’re probably unaware that Jamie Lee Curtis has publically thrown shade at the MCU by calling the entirety of Phase 5 “bad.”
The comment was more hilarious than anything, when the actress was asked during SDCC in which phase the MCU is currently in, the actress responded with “bad.”
Despite the obvious joke behind it, it managed to generate quite a backlash among fans. Many fans came to the defense of the MCU calling the actress “bitter,” “salty,” and “rude.”
Curtis already has some “strained” history with the franchise. In the past, she has commented on ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ and drew some parallels with her own ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once.’ This implies that MoM ripped off some aspects of the movie.
She noted that both films explore the multiverse concept. Curtis accused ‘Doctor Strange’ of mimicking her film’s artwork, suggesting that her movie, despite its smaller budget, outshines Marvel’s. She praised ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ for its heart, visual appeal, performances, and fight scenes, claiming it achieved more with significantly fewer financial resources.
But, more recently, her upcoming ‘Borderlands’ movie was compared to the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ franchise with many noting that ‘Borderlands’ has a similar aesthetic feel. In any case, there’s a history between the actress and Marvel, and she ultimately decided to apologize for her comment.
You can argue that this apology is not an apology at all but to each his own. Things got interesting when Ryan Reynolds, the newest addition to the MCU seemingly tried to relieve some of the tension by making fun of the MCU further:
Reynolds pokes fun at the current state of the MCU in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ as well as telling Jackman’s character – Wolverine that he is joining “at a bit of a low point.” The reactions to Reynold’s joke were mixed with some quite frankly being annoyed that the same overused joke took over the celebrity discourse as well, and some praising him for standing up to Curtis who has every right to voice her opinion.
