As we progress into 2024, the box office situation remains disappointing. While Inside Out 2 made a significant impact and helped revive the box office this summer, and Deadpool & Wolverine continued that momentum, the overall performance is still lackluster.

Earlier this year, we reported that the box office was experiencing one of its worst years in recent history. Although several potential hits were on the horizon, the improvement didn’t begin until Inside Out 2 debuted, becoming the first—and so far only—film of the year to surpass $1 billion globally.

In a recent report, Variety confirms that despite some improvements, the situation remains bleak. While revenue is increasing, it falls far short of the levels seen in recent years, indicating that overall conditions are still not improving.

If you recall from our previous reports, George Miller’s Furiosa was expected to be a major box office hit following Dune: Part 2. While the film did manage to break even, it was considered a disappointment overall, despite generally positive reviews. The Fall Guy also fell short of expectations at the box office, placing even more pressure on Inside Out 2 to save the summer. Fortunately, Inside Out 2 performed exceptionally well, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year so far.

Godzilla x Kong had a strong showing, as did the latest installments of the Bad Boys, Despicable Me, A Quiet Place, and Planet of the Apes franchises. Twisters also earned solid returns, but the next major success was Deadpool & Wolverine, which is performing exceptionally well at the box office as of now. As of this writing, the top 10 highest earners of the year are:

#MovieTotalDomestic
1Inside Out 2$1,525,262,246$620,162,24640.7%
2Dune: Part Two$711,844,358$282,144,35839.6%
3Despicable Me 4$689,051,188$302,720,17043.9%
4Deadpool & Wolverine$630,575,919$298,575,91947.3%
5Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire$567,650,016$196,350,01634.6%
6Kung Fu Panda 4$545,846,093$193,590,62035.5%
7Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes$397,050,375$170,945,38043.1%
8Bad Boys: Ride or Die$395,820,258$192,316,71348.6%
9A Quiet Place: Day One$255,501,020$136,001,02053.2%
10Twisters$239,035,650$172,935,65072.3%

While these figures do seem promising, the Variety article we’ve referenced confirms that every month this year, except March, has brought in less revenue compared to the same months last year. This trend extends to the total annual gross—summer typically generates the bulk of box office revenue, but this year, according to the article, it accounted for just over 50% of last year’s total. This suggests that, excluding the pandemic year, this will be the weakest box office year in the past 12 years.
