As a key member of the Avengers and a pivotal character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Widow is immensely popular. She made her film debut in the Iron Man series and played a crucial role in the Infinity Saga until her character’s tragic death in the final two films. Scarlett Johansson’s tenure in the MCU effectively concluded with Black Widow’s death, though the character did receive a standalone prequel film.
Chris Evans had a similar trajectory as Captain America, debuting in a standalone movie and becoming one of the MCU’s most important characters before his story ended in Endgame with his character aging after time travel. While Evans’ departure from Marvel was amicable and marked by mutual respect, Johansson’s exit was marred by a lawsuit, which has since been resolved.
However, this story isn’t about the MCU; it’s about Evans and Johansson, two friends both on and off set, who were once the subject of considerable romantic speculation. This gossip apparently influenced the production of a certain movie early in their careers.
Speculation about Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans being a couple is old news. Before their MCU debuts, they worked together on another film, and the director was well aware of the gossip. It’s known that Johansson convinced Evans to join the MCU, but prior to that, they starred in the 2004 teen flick The Perfect Score, where Evans was already captivated by Johansson:
“I was shocked I was older than her. Not because of how she looked but because of how she had this poise, this wisdom. Everyone always says Scarlett is wise beyond her years.”

While we don’t know Scarlett’s initial thoughts about Evans back then, she later expressed her sympathies for him, recalling the on-screen kiss they shared (one of many):
“Any excuse to get close to Chris Evans is delightful … At this point, we’re old and jaded, so it’s like, ‘Bring him on!’ No big deal. Pop in the Tic-Tacs. Get the cameras rolling.”

Given their obvious chemistry, it was impossible for those around them to ignore it. This was certainly true for The Perfect Score director, Brian Robbins, who instructed them to keep their hands off each other while on set:
“They hang out together a lot. But I told them in the first day of rehearsal [of the Perfect Score], that they can’t sleep with each other. And, I’m not quite sure whether they obey[ed] me ’cause there was a lot of skinny-dipping going on. So, I’m not saying anything happened, but … who knows.”
