While the MCU is currently centered on Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Victor Von Doom, one of Marvel’s most formidable villains, the comics are charting their own course. The beloved storylines and characters in Marvel’s comics are continuing to evolve, and this report will focus on that evolution.

Specifically, we’ll delve into the latest Avengers comic book storyline by Jed MacKay. The issue in question is Avengers #18, which continues from the previous installment that introduced Storm as the newest member of the Avengers.

The upcoming issue will feature a dramatic showdown between Storm and Hyperion, the Avengers’ current adversary who is portrayed as Marvel’s villainous counterpart to Superman. Additionally, our colleague Isaac Jansons from ScreenRant adds a personal perspective to the story, which we’ll also share with you here.

As mentioned, Storm recently joined the Avengers in the comics and immediately faced a formidable opponent: Hyperion. For those unfamiliar, Hyperion is Marvel’s villainous counterpart to Superman. The original version of Hyperion debuted in Avengers (vol. 1) #69, created by Roy Thomas, Sal Buscema, and Sam Grainger, as a character from the alternate Earth-712, also known as Earth-S. Since then, Marvel has introduced various iterations of the character, including some heroic versions, but none from Earth-616 have appeared yet.

Nevertheless, Hyperion has caused significant trouble for the Avengers, but Avengers #18 suggests that Storm may have finally met her match in him and could be the one to resolve the conflict. This development is sure to be intriguing, and as Isaac Jansons puts it:

It will be fascinating to see how Storm’s presence on the Avengers affects the larger perception of mutants in the Marvel Universe, especially if she’s going to be saving the world very publicly. This version of the Avengers is more sympathetic to the X-Men than some prior teams, having fought anti-mutant coalition Orchis in Avengers (2023) #12-13, but the previews coming out of the X-Men’s latest status quo, From the Ashes, suggest that this still isn’t a good time for mutants. Storm’s presence on the Avengers could be a boon for mutants, but it’s far from a guarantee.

While it will be interesting to find out Storm’s presence on the Avengers improve human/mutant relations, especially after her fight with Hyperion, it would be even more interesting if it didn’t do anything. So many X-Men stories have shown that the X-Men’s attempts to appease, and appeal to, the general public just don’t work, because some people never want to hear it. It might be cynical. though realistic, if Storm’s heroic Avengers battle against Hyperion saved the world from the Superman analogue, but ultimately did little for her public standing, or that of mutants.
