One of the most-watched superhero series on television, The Boys, wrapped up its fourth season on July 18, 2024. Initially receiving mixed reviews, the show has since gained traction and is now Certified Fresh with strong ratings.
While we’ve covered many of the intriguing developments from the fourth season here on Comic Basics, one significant cameo—the return of Soldier Boy—continues to captivate fans. The fourth season hinted at a larger role for the character in the final season of The Boys, which is set to premiere in 2026.
During a recent media session at San Diego Comic-Con, where the series was first announced, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke shared new details about the upcoming final season. He also gave insights into what fans can expect from Soldier Boy in the series’ concluding chapter.
Soldier Boy has captivated fans since his debut in The Boys. With one of the most compelling character arcs in the series, he initially worked alongside the Boys against Homelander. However, by the end, he revealed himself to be as corrupt as the other supes. Despite appearing to die in Season 3, Kripke and Ackles had hinted that Soldier Boy’s story would continue, which has now been confirmed in Season 4.
At the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, Eric Kripke discussed what’s in store for Soldier Boy and explained why the character is making a return. Here’s what he had to say:
“You know, what we realized was we really hadn’t explored the father-son relationship much between Homelander and Soldier Boy. There’s a lot of material there, how soldier boy feels about Homelander, how Homelander feels about his dad, and so we really wanted to dig into that relationship. (…) Soldier Boy is really driven to kill Butcher after Butcher betrayed him in season 3. So he’s just an excellent antagonist, to switch sides and basically, you know, to be with the supes.”

As evident, Soldier Boy will play a significantly larger role in Season 5, and it will be intriguing to see his fate unfold, particularly given that a previously unexpected alliance with Homelander now seems quite possible. Additionally, Kripke has confirmed that Soldier Boy will be a series regular in the final season:
“We can announce to everyone at Comic Con: Soldier Boy will be back as a series regular for season 5. He’s back. The motherfucker’s back.”
There’s plenty to look forward to in the final season.
