Disney’s latest Star Wars project, The Acolyte, has sparked numerous debates since its release, facing both review-bombing and enthusiastic fan support. While much of the discussion centered on minor issues, some debates addressed significant canon-related matters.

With The Acolyte concluding after eight episodes, fans are eagerly anticipating more Star Wars content. Many franchise enthusiasts feel that the show’s climactic final episode redeemed it. Although Skeleton Crew is set to debut later this year, Lucasfilm has also confirmed that new movies are in development.

Following recent reports, Disney and Lucasfilm have confirmed plans to release three Star Wars movies between 2026 and 2027. In this article, we’ll explore what this means for the future of the franchise.

As the Star Wars franchise progresses beyond The Acolyte, fans are hopeful for a second season of the show. However, neither Disney nor Lucasfilm have confirmed this yet. What is confirmed is that several new television projects are on the horizon, along with three upcoming movies slated for release between 2026 and 2027.

While the titles of these films have not been officially announced, we can reasonably speculate about at least two of them. One of the most anticipated is The Mandalorian & Grogu, a theatrical film that will continue the storyline from the popular series. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are writing the screenplay, with Filoni also directing. Pedro Pascal will reprise his role, and the film is currently in pre-production, set for a global release on May 22, 2026.

The second movie is likely to be the tentatively titled New Jedi Order, which is planned as a sequel to Episode IX of the Sequel Trilogy and will focus on Rey establishing a new Jedi Order. Daisy Ridley will return as Rey, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy from a script by Steven Knight. The film is currently in pre-production, though no release date has been set. It is expected to be one of the three upcoming films.

As for the third movie, it could be either James Mangold’s tentatively titled Dawn of the Jedi or Dave Filoni’s New Republic film. Both projects are in the early stages of production, and no release dates have been announced yet, so we will need to wait for further confirmation.
