“Deadpool & Wolverine,” now in its third week in theaters and starring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine alongside Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, was easily one of the most anticipated films of the year for fans. Since its release three weeks ago, the movie has shattered several box office records, making it one of the most successful films of the year. This weekend, it finally crossed the $1 billion mark, securing its place as the second-highest-grossing film of 2024.
While “Deadpool & Wolverine” is unlikely to surpass the impressive $1.5 billion earned by “Inside Out 2,” it is set to remain one of the top films of 2024. Meanwhile, “It Ends with Us,” starring Blake Lively, who is married to Ryan Reynolds, debuted in theaters this week. Many analysts predicted that this film, based on Colleen Hoover’s best-selling book, might dethrone “Deadpool & Wolverine” after its three-week reign at the box office. However, that didn’t happen, though the race was remarkably close.
The weekend numbers are in, confirming that “Deadpool & Wolverine” continues to dominate the box office for the third consecutive week. But with “It Ends with Us” coming in so close, it was a strong showing for both films.
We previously reported that “It Ends with Us” managed to surpass “Deadpool & Wolverine” in box office earnings on Friday, leading some analysts to speculate that it might overtake the Marvel film for the entire weekend. However, most predicted a close race with “Deadpool & Wolverine” ultimately pulling ahead—and that’s exactly what happened.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” took the lead on both Saturday and Sunday, earning $21.7 million and $16.8 million, respectively. Meanwhile, “It Ends with Us” couldn’t maintain its Friday momentum, bringing in $13.7 million and $12.1 million on the same days. This created an intriguing head-to-head competition between the two films, with the Marvel movie starring Ryan Reynolds edging out the film starring his wife, Blake Lively.
By the end of the weekend, “Deadpool & Wolverine” secured the top spot with a total gross of $54.2 million, while “It Ends with Us” came in second with $50 million. Some have likened this competition to last year’s “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, though the numbers aren’t quite as massive, the rivalry between the two films carries a similar energy.
As for the rest of the weekend box office, Glen Powell’s Twisters had a strong showing, holding onto the third spot with an additional $15 million. Borderlands landed in fourth place, though its performance was underwhelming, while Despicable Me 4 rounded out the top five with $8 million. Trap, Inside Out 2, and Harold and the Purple Crayon secured the sixth through eighth spots, respectively. NEON’s film Cuckoo made its debut at ninth place with $3 million, and the studio’s horror movie Longlegs, starring Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe, held on to the top ten with a solid $2 million.
