It’s well-known that Brie Larson’s portrayal of Captain Marvel has faced significant backlash online, including a petition calling for her removal from the role that has garnered substantial support. While we may not fully grasp the reasons behind this backlash, it’s clear that some fans have been seeking alternatives.
Although Larson, an Oscar-winning actress, delivered a strong performance as one of Marvel’s leading superheroes, there remains a desire among some fans for a different take on the character. While some have suggested that Captain Marvel should be portrayed by a male actor, others believe the issue lies with the actress rather than the character’s gender.
In light of this, it’s interesting to note that the MCU had an alternative in mind all along. One actress has publicly stated that she would have accepted the role had Marvel offered it to her, making this an intriguing topic for discussion.
As you might be aware, Captain Marvel is not tied to a single character but is more of a title that various individuals have assumed over time. The original Captain Marvel was Mar-Vell, a Kree military officer created by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan, who first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #12 in 1967. Mar-Vell wore the mantle until 1982, when Monica Rambeau took over. Since then, several characters have held the title, with Carol Danvers being the most recent.
Marvel’s decision to cast an Oscar-winning and highly popular actress like Brie Larson for the role was a logical choice. However, not all fans were pleased, as Larson’s performance received mixed reviews for various reasons, with some expressing general discontent online.
While it’s unclear who Marvel considered for the role before Larson was cast, it has been revealed that Ronda Rousey, known for her roles in The Expendables and Fast & Furious and as an Olympic bronze medalist in judo from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, would have accepted the role of Carol Danvers had she been offered it.
In a recently resurfaced interview from before the release of the first Captain Marvel movie, Rousey was asked the following question:
If you were to be in a superhero movie, which hero would you play?
Thanks for doing this AMA!
To which she replied:
well… a lot of the good ones have been taken, but I’d like to vie for Miss Marvel.
