The Hulk and Wolverine have a famously turbulent relationship in Marvel’s comics, shifting from allies to adversaries countless times. Both are iconic and beloved figures in the comic book world, with the Hulk typically standing alone, often linked to the Avengers, while Wolverine is deeply connected to the X-Men as one of their most famous members. Though both characters have made their way to the big screen, they have yet to face off—largely due to various copyright issues. However, with the X-Men now entering the MCU, a crossover seems more possible than ever.
Fans are less interested in a Hulk and Wolverine team-up and far more eager to see them clash in an epic battle, ideally with Hugh Jackman and Mark Ruffalo reprising their roles. While there’s no official confirmation yet, rumors suggest such a showdown could be in the works. But what many fans don’t realize is that this epic battle already happened—15 years ago!
To be honest, the fight we’re referring to may not be one that many of you would immediately “recognize” as official, but it’s still a licensed Marvel movie, so there’s no reason to dismiss it. In 2009, a film titled Hulk Vs. was released, featuring two separate stories: one where the Hulk battles Thor and another where he faces off against Wolverine. Marvel officially described the latter as follows:
The Incredible Hulk has been tearing a line across the Canadian wilderness, leaving a swath of destruction in his wake. He has to be stopped, and there’s only one man up to the job. He’s the best at what he does, but what he does isn’t very nice. He’s Wolverine, an elite agent of Canada’s top secret Department H, and he’s been put on Hulk’s trail with a single objective: stop the green goliath…at all costs. Hulk and Wolverine are about to enter the fiercest battle of their lives.
Although it was a direct-to-video release, Hulk Vs. delivered an epic and brutal showdown between these two Marvel superheroes—exactly the kind of clash fans have been craving. You can check out some scenes from the movie below:
As for the live-action showdown we’re all waiting for, it doesn’t seem likely at the moment. However, Mark Ruffalo has pitched the idea of a Hulk vs. Wolverine movie to Kevin Feige, and we’ve seen a tease of this battle in one of the many universes featured in Deadpool & Wolverine. While it’s uncertain if this project will ever come to fruition, we can always hope!
