‘The Acolyte’ Fans Afraid That The Show Will Be “Nuked” from Disney+ as Company Starts Removing Merch, Similar to ‘Willow’

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ is the most recent Star Wars installment that aired for 8 episodes. The show was recently canceled, and while the reason wasn’t confirmed we can speculate it had something to do with record-low viewership and high production costs.

The show was the target of many hate-fueled attacks but also a legitimate criticism due to its low quality and poor storyline.

Despite the controversy, the show did amass a small audience very vocal on social media, which eventually started a petition to “resurrect” the show. However, the chances of that seem nonexistent as the company is seemingly trying to distance itself from the product. Yesterday, ALL ‘The Acolyte’ merch was removed from the official store, currently, only a few T-shirts have been added.

This scenario is similar to the ill-fated revival of ‘Willow.’ If you’re not familiar with it, ‘Willow’ was a live-action series serving as a sequel to the 1988 movie of the same name. Disney wanted to have something to compete with ‘The Rings of Power’ but the attempt failed miserably.

Despite the show receiving great critical reviews, the audience response was abysmal and the viewership was low, with many likening it to a parody of the original movie. The show’s tone was jarring, with modern dialogue and a cast of late teens and early 20s that felt inconsistent with the original film’s focus on a young father and a roguish swordfighter. The soundtrack, replacing James Horner’s acclaimed score with bland modern rock, highlighted a lack of a clear target audience. Although the special effects were decent, the costumes were criticized for being out of place, with some characters dressed more for the Australian outback than a fantasy realm.

Less than six months after the show arrived on the platform it was removed as a part of cost-cutting measures. Just like ‘The Acolyte’ the show also had its merch pulled from the store.

Fans are now afraid that Disney+ might pull ‘The Acolyte’ from its library which will effectively remove all legal ways to watch the show. In any case, the petition might stop that from happening even if the show doesn’t get resurrected.
