Disney’s latest Star Wars project, The Acolyte, has been mired in controversy since its debut, facing significant review-bombing (and a lot of legit bad reviews) and criticism. Despite some redemption in the final episodes, the series has been officially canceled, and there will be no second season.
This news has sparked mixed reactions online. While some fans were disappointed, others accepted the outcome. Meanwhile, the show’s star, Amandla Stenberg, has faced harassment and bullying from “fans,” which we strongly condemn.
In a positive turn, John Boyega, a fellow Star Wars actor with his own complex history with Disney, has shown support for Stenberg. He publicly backed her on Instagram, standing up against the bullying and offering a commendable show of solidarity.
As noted in our previous report, shortly after the cancellation of The Acolyte was announced, a wave of online bullying directed at Amandla Stenberg began. This type of harmful and abusive behavior has no place on the internet. While it’s unclear how the actress has responded to these offensive and disturbing messages, we hope she dismisses them as the actions of a small group rather than true Star Wars fans.
In a recent social media post made after the show’s conclusion but before its official cancellation, Stenberg shared the following:
In case you’re unable to open this, the comment goes as follows:
it takes a village to build a character, let alone twins 🙂 now that all of our show is out I have to thank the beautiful people who became my family on this show. starting with @kellina___ and @cassiejocraig, the best damn stuntwomen in the game, who guided me lovingly and with patience as I grew into a stunt actor, shaped and molded Osha and Mae alongside me with such finesse, and busted their asses to deliver incredible stunt work day in and out. I love you my dear sisters, and miss wearing our bunny hats in bed after getting our asses kicked all day. <333
This is definitely a positive development and shows that Stenberg has support, especially given that other cast members from the series have not faced similar bullying. The Star Wars fandom has become increasingly toxic, and we hope that genuine fans will step up to filter out the hateful individuals who use the internet to harass and abuse young people.
