Andrew Garfield portrayed Spider-Man in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ (2012) and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ (2014). Although the franchise was never massively popular while he was leading it, he was decent enough in the role which is why fans were extremely happy to see him in ‘No Way Home’ along with Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire.

Now one incident marked the marketing campaign for ‘No Way Home,’ and that was the fact that Garfield lied about being in the movie for two years.

Andrew Garfield initially denied his involvement in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (2021), which sparked widespread speculation and excitement among fans. Once the movie was released and Garfield was allowed to come clean, the actor stated that it felt good to lie to people and the internet for two years:

I lied to people for a good two years. I lied to the internet for two years and it felt great. It was fun to keep it secret. You know when you’re planning a surprise birthday party for someone and they’re like ‘I hate surprises, is the party happening.’ […] It felt like organizing a surprise party for a bunch of people.

Now, with the upcoming ‘Spider-Man 4’ being in development, plenty of rumors are claiming that Garfield and Maguire will reprise their roles in the upcoming Spidey flick. Considering that the movie will follow the multiversal themes of the previous installment and that legacy characters are currently a big deal in the MCU, it’s reasonable to assume that the studio will make a repeat of the recipe that worked the first time around.

Indiewire recently asked Garfield about ‘Spider-Man 4,’ and the actor found himself in “the boy who cried wolf” situation. Garfield denied his involvement with the movie stating that fans have been duped by online rumors:

“The internet is a big place. I think there’s a lot of people who will just say anything to get clicks. So you might have been duped, I’m afraid”

Garfield is, in theory, correct, and what he says does make sense, however, at this point, his credibility is ruined, as not a single person is buying what he is peddling:
