While the MCU is currently focused on Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Victor Von Doom, one of Marvel’s most formidable villains, Marvel’s comics continue to evolve their own storylines and characters. This report will delve into one such story, which is not a new release but a significant one from 2015 that ties into the Secret Wars storyline.
This comic book holds considerable importance as it unveils a major mystery that has puzzled Marvel fans for some time: the meaning behind Groot’s phrase, “I am Groot.” This 2015 issue reveals the true origins of this phrase, and you might be surprised to learn that its significance is quite different from what you might expect!
The source of this report is the 2015 Secret Wars tie-in, The Infinity Gauntlet, written by Dustin Weaver and Gerry Duggan. With Secret Wars making a comeback in the MCU, we revisited this classic comic and discovered an intriguing detail that we want to share.
The story follows Thanos on his latest quest to gather the elusive Infinity Stones, as he seeks out new protectors and wielders in an alternate reality where the last Annihilation event had different outcomes. This revised narrative reintroduces the sentient tree “Groot” to the Marvel universe, revealing that his famous phrase was not just his initial spoken words but also a result of a misunderstanding by his future Guardian companions.
At the time, the Guardians of the Galaxy had not yet been formed, so Groot was unfamiliar to them. As shown in the panel below, this is what actually transpired:
As it turns out, Groot never actually says “I am Groot.” Instead, he simply utters “eye hmmm grew root.” This phrase is misheard and misinterpreted by Anwen as “I am Groot,” leading to the character’s name and the origin of the iconic phrase.
So, Groot never truly said “I am Groot,” and the phrase itself holds no real meaning. It’s both amusing and a bit melancholy, but it does clarify why Groot remains a character we can’t fully understand in the Marvel universe.
