‘The Rings of Power’ Faces Potential Cancellation Amid Dismal Viewership Numbers

Season 2 of ‘The Rings of Power’ recently premiered, setting the stage for the season’s main themes. We see Sauron beginning to manipulate Celebrimbor, the gradual decline of the Dwarves, and new context about the Orcs in Middle-Earth that diverges significantly from the established lore. Galadriel also shows signs of growth, transforming from a reckless warrior into a more reflective character.

While the show has received some praise from critics, and early reactions suggest an improvement over the first season, one concerning trend remains: a clear disregard for the original source material.

It seems fans are quickly losing interest in ‘The Rings of Power.’ As reported earlier, initial viewership numbers for Season 2 suggest trouble for the show’s future. According to Deadline, Samba TV data shows that 1.8 million U.S. households watched the first episode of Season 1 within three days of its release on Prime Video. In stark contrast, only 902,000 U.S. households tuned in for the Season 2 premiere within four days.

This decline is particularly concerning given the show’s enormous budget. The first season of ‘The Rings of Power’ cost a record-breaking $465 million, not including the $250 million Amazon paid for the rights to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien’s works.

While the exact budget for Season 2 hasn’t been disclosed, it’s expected to be similar, given there are no notable technical differences between the two seasons. Amazon originally committed to a five-season production valued at at least $1 billion when it acquired the television rights in November 2017.

The lower viewership may partly be due to a reduced marketing push compared to Season 1, but fan reactions online suggest a different issue. The series could face the same fate as ‘The Acolyte,’ which suffered from low viewership, poor reception, and a massive budget, leading to its cancellation.

Canceling ‘The Rings of Power’ could be complicated due to the original five-season plan, but a reboot with a new creative team that stays faithful to Tolkien’s vision might be the best option moving forward.
