Despite Strong Viewership, ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘The Rings of Power’ Face Criticism as Executives Plan Ahead

Despite mixed fan opinions, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has gained popularity on Amazon. The second season, which premiered on August 29, 2024, with its first three episodes, is gradually building momentum according to recent Amazon data. Meanwhile, HBO’s House of the Dragon also enjoyed a successful second season earlier this year and has been renewed for a third.

However, both series, while boasting large and dedicated fanbases, are not without their flaws. Critics, including those with valid concerns rather than just toxic haters, have pointed out significant issues. This report draws on George R.R. Martin’s recent critiques of House of the Dragon for deviating too much from his original work and suggests that The Rings of Power faces a similar challenge as it progresses.

Recently, Martin penned a detailed blog post discussing the issues he found with House of the Dragon Season 2. He criticized the numerous story changes and cuts, noting how the original rawness of the books was diluted for the adaptation, leading to additional problems. He concluded the post with the following remarks:

What will we offer the fans instead, once we’ve killed these butterflies? I have no idea. I do not recall that Ryan and I ever discussed this, back when he first told me they were pushing back on Aegon’s second son. Maelor himself is not essential… but if losing him means we also lose Bitterbridge, Helaena’s suicide, and the riots, well… that’s a considerable loss.

And there are larger and more toxic butterflies to come, if HOUSE OF THE DRAGON goes ahead with some of the changes being contemplated for seasons 3 and 4…

While we won’t delve too deeply into Martin’s comments here, it’s clear that he makes a valid point. As the author, his insights carry significant weight. Adapting a book for television naturally involves changes, and while fans and Martin might sometimes expect too much from the medium, their concerns are often justified.

The desire to see a book’s story faithfully adapted is strong among fans. Although some changes are necessary for practical reasons, they can sometimes result in alterations that significantly impact the story. True Tolkien fans (not the detractors) have voiced similar concerns about The Rings of Power, which, so far, has managed to navigate these issues reasonably well. However, the issues Martin raised about House of the Dragon are also relevant to The Rings of Power.

House of the Dragon has been renewed for a third season, with a fourth in development, according to Martin. Meanwhile, Amazon is sticking to its five-season commitment for The Rings of Power, as reported by THR. Moving forward, the producers and executives will need to carefully balance the demands of television adaptation with the expectations of fans and critics who seek faithful representations of the source material.
