Only a few hours stand between us and the premiere of ‘Agatha All Along’ the latest installment in the MCU. The first reactions to the show are in and they are mostly positive with a number of early viewers noting that the show does have a somewhat slow start.
The show will follow Agatha Harkness as she manages to escape her imprisonment at the hands of the Scarlet Witch. The thing is, Agatha returns to the world powerless and is forced to gather a makeshift coven of witches, both friendly and unfriendly in order to walk the witches’ road and reclaim her powers.
Even ahead of the show’s premiere, it was known that it was going to do wonders for queer presentation in the MCU. The star of the show Joe Locke, already commented on his openly gay character, Billy Kaplan aka Wiccan, who is canonically gay in the comics in a notable relationship with Hulkling.
Locke already commented how he was facing sort of a backlash for that fact but explained that he isn’t bothered too much by it. The actor commented that the show does not shy away from being queer:
The show never shies away from his queerness, but it’s not a defining feature of his character. It’s just one layer of him as a person.
Aubrey Plaza also commented and teased on the potential romance between Agatha and her character, the Green Witch Rio Vidal, something that Hahn confirmed.
The show is pretty campy, and sort of a musical as Patti LuPone confirmed, it’s clear that queer community will finally have a project that will dedicate significant screen time and story to their visibility within the MCU.
During the ‘Agatha All Along’ premiere on the purple carpet, Aubrey Plaza was asked by Variety journalist whether she agrees that the show is the gayest Marvel show ever, Plaza had a predictable answer:
“It better be, cause that’s what I signed up for.”
As you can see the show seems to be tailored to the specific audience and while not everyone will be able to necessarily enjoy it, it seems like a welcome addition and a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale MCU.
