‘The Acolyte’ Could Have Thrived with a Different Female Director at the Helm

No other Star Wars project has stirred as much controversy as The Acolyte. Since Disney took over Lucasfilm, many Star Wars productions have faced fan backlash, but none compare to the level of outrage aimed at this series, which escalated into a full-blown hate campaign by self-proclaimed “true fans.”

The Acolyte won’t be returning for a second season, as Lucasfilm has confirmed its cancellation after just eight episodes. While fans had hoped for a continuation, the show’s fate is sealed. However, this report isn’t about the series’ cancellation—it’s about how it could have been better.

With an intriguing premise, The Acolyte had the potential to ignite a wave of Old Republic content leading into the Prequel Trilogy. Unfortunately, the show fell short of expectations. We believe that its potential might have been better realized if Kathleen Kennedy had entrusted the project to a different female director, rather than Leslye Headland.

Lucasfilm invested heavily in The Acolyte, hoping it would match the success of The Mandalorian or Ahsoka. As a significant prequel project, expectations were high, but even before its release, many toxic “fans” began criticizing it for its diverse cast and female leads.

Comments from the cast and crew, which at times directly provoked these critics, fueled the negativity, leading to a massive hate and review-bombing campaign. However, the show’s cancellation wasn’t due to this backlash alone—it had deeper issues that ultimately led to its downfall.

While multiple factors played a role, it’s clear that showrunner Leslye Headland bears much of the responsibility. Instead of focusing on making the show a success, she engaged with toxic “fans” online and treated the series as her personal project, which didn’t sit well with everyone.

But could The Acolyte have been better with the same cast, characters, and premise? We believe so. Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm had a brilliant alternative in Bryce Dallas Howard.

Howard, an accomplished actress and director, has directed episodes of The Mandalorian to great acclaim. Many fans have been calling for her to take on a larger role within the franchise. She clearly understands the Star Wars universe and knows how to deliver a great story.

Had Howard been in charge, the show could have retained its core elements, but we’re confident that the major issues under Headland’s leadership would have been avoided. Howard likely would have crafted a more compelling and coherent series, living up to the potential that The Acolyte had. It’s unfortunate that such an intriguing project fell apart when a better option was right in front of us.
