Henry Cavill’s Past Comments Hint That Gunn and Safran May Have Been Involved in His Firing, Despite Gunn’s Claims

Warner Bros., which owns the rights to DC Comics characters, aimed to develop its own shared universe after witnessing the massive success of Disney’s MCU.

This led to the creation of the original DCEU. Despite having immense potential, a strong cast, and a few standout films, the DCEU was hindered by too many poor decisions and missteps along the way, leading to its eventual downfall.

Enter James Gunn. When Gunn took over the DCEU, which was in complete turmoil, he decided to wipe the slate clean and build a new universe known as the DCU. Among the sweeping changes, one of the most significant was casting David Corenswet as the new Superman.

This decision meant that Henry Cavill, a fan favorite in the role of the Man of Steel, was let go—a move that continues to fuel debate in the entertainment world. While James Gunn recently claimed he had no involvement in Cavill’s departure, an older statement from Cavill seems to contradict that claim, casting doubt on Gunn’s narrative.

Henry Cavill’s departure from the role of Superman remains a controversial decision that many fans still disagree with. Cavill was widely beloved in the role, and despite the DCEU’s mixed results, audiences felt his performance stood out. Many hoped he would continue as Superman in the newly rebooted DCU. However, when James Gunn took over, he chose to cast David Corenswet for his upcoming ‘Superman’ film, effectively replacing Cavill.

Fans have speculated that Gunn personally made the decision to fire Cavill, but Gunn recently addressed the situation, stating that the choice to let Cavill go had already been made by Warner Bros. before he stepped in.

We recently uncovered an old tweet that we previously reported on, which appears to clear James Gunn of any direct involvement in Henry Cavill’s departure as Superman. However, an earlier statement made by Cavill himself offers a very different perspective on the situation:

I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.

The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

Cavill’s statement suggests that Gunn and Safran’s arrival led to his dismissal, while Gunn insists the two events were unrelated, pointing the finger at Warner Bros. In reality, as with many situations like this, the truth likely lies somewhere in the middle, with both sides being partially correct.

The current reality is that Cavill won’t be returning as Superman anytime soon, and Corenswet will take over the role in the DCU—something fans will have to come to terms with.
