Colin Farrell’s Hilarious Take on Whether Tom Cruise Is Gay Will Have You in Stitches!

Colin Farrell is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable movie stars in the industry today. With HBO’s The Penguin, a spin-off from Matt Reeves’ The Batman, currently dominating the market and earning praise from both critics and fans, the Irish actor is riding high on success.

Beyond this latest venture, Farrell has delivered memorable performances throughout his career. His recent role in The Banshees of Inisherin earned him an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win.

While his filmography also includes standout roles in Lanthimos’ The Lobster, The Killing of the Sacred Deer, Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen, Steve McQueen’s Widows, Joel Schumacher’s gripping thriller Phone Booth, Tim Burton’s Dumbo, and Martin McDonagh’s dark comedies In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths.

Farrell’s career has been marked by remarkable performances, but it has also been filled with wild incidents, as he was once known as one of Hollywood’s biggest “bad boys.” In light of that, we came across an old interview with Farrell that is sure to make you laugh out loud!

The video we’re about to share was part of the promotion for Hart’s War, a war film featuring Colin Farrell and Bruce Willis, released in 2002.

That same year, Farrell also starred in Minority Report alongside Tom Cruise, meaning he was working on both films simultaneously. With that context in mind, here’s the video:

In the interview, Farrell was asked if he thought Tom Cruise was gay, to which he jokingly replied, “Gayaaahstraight.” At that time, rumors about Cruise’s sexuality were circulating, and while he denied them, the early 2000s weren’t as open-minded as today. If Cruise had come out back then, his career might have taken a very different path.

Immediately, Farrell corrected himself, admitting he wasn’t sure why he said that. He added, “No one has perfect gaydar, but I have a pretty good one.” While this moment isn’t meant to be taken too seriously, it highlights two things.

First, Farrell was genuinely a “bad boy” who wasn’t afraid of stirring up controversy. But he was also authentic—funny and witty. While he’s done things that can’t be excused, this video perfectly captures sincerity in a world often filled with pretense. That’s part of what we love about him, and we’re glad he’s managed to turn his life around.
