DCU’s ‘Lanterns’ Apparently Has Two Contenders for the Role of John Stewart

DCU has plenty of projects in the works under the watchful eyes of James Gunn and Peter Safran. The projects closest to us are the ‘Creature Commandos’ animated series and ‘Superman’ scheduled for a 2025 release, still plenty of live-action shows focusing on the most notable DC characters are in the works.

In recent weeks, we’ve got plenty of updates related to a ‘Lanterns’ show, a cosmic-detective story focusing on three notable Green Lanterns. We know that Guy Gardner will be portrayed by Nathan Fillion.

Hal Jordan will be played by Kyle Chandler, despite numerous protests from fans due to the actor’s age. So far, the only unknown in the equation is the role of John Stewart.

This is the most important role overall since the show will apparently focus on Stewart with Jordan serving more like a mentor-type figure. Considering that the studio did indeed cast an older Hal Jordan (Brolin was also in consideration and was also older) we can expect him to either die or retire by the end of the show.

Plenty of names have been mentioned in the context of John Stewart but The Hollywood Reporter finally has something solid. Aaron Pierre and Stephan James are apparently the frontrunners for the role, with Damson Idris dropping out of the race due to scheduling conflicts.

‘Lanterns’ has received a straight-to-series order at HBO, featuring a team of esteemed creators. Chris Mundy (‘Ozark’), Damon Lindelof (‘Watchmen,’ ‘Lost’), and Eisner Award-winning comic book writer Tom King are on board as executive producers and writers, with Mundy serving as the showrunner.

Aaron Pierre is a talented British actor known for his notable roles in ‘The Underground Railroad’ as Caesar and M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Old’ as Brandon. He has also appeared in ‘The Last Tree,’ ‘Britannia,’ and ‘The King’s Man.’

Pierre was also supposed to have a part in MCU’s ‘Blade’ reboot but he eventually gave up on the project.

Stephan James is likewise best known for his leading role as John Lewis in the critically acclaimed film ‘Selma’ and for his performance in the Amazon series ‘Homecoming,’ where he stars alongside Julia Roberts. He has also appeared in notable projects like ‘If Beale Street Could Talk,’ earning praise for his portrayal of Fonny, and in the Netflix film ‘Race,’ where he played the iconic athlete Jesse Owens.
