Is the MCU’s Deadpool Part of the LGBTQ+ Community? Ryan Reynolds Drops Hints!

As comic book fans know, Deadpool is one of the most controversial and divisive characters in history. Created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld, he first appeared in New Mutants #98 in December 1990 and has since become a beloved cult classic.

Deadpool’s history is intricate and layered, featuring many well-known meta moments. He is also canonically pansexual, making him a member of the LGBTQ+ community in the comics. This raises the question: is Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of Deadpool also LGBTQ+ in the films?

While the MCU has not explicitly confirmed this, Ryan Reynolds’ past comments—along with several in-universe hints—suggest that Deadpool is indeed an LGBTQ+ character in the movies, just like in the comics.

As mentioned, Deadpool is canonically pansexual. Throughout his comic book adventures, he has had romantic relationships with various characters—male, female, human, alien, and non-human—clearly establishing him as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in the comics.

However, censorship standards for movies differ, and changes often occur during the adaptation process. A character who isn’t LGBTQ+ in the comics might be portrayed as such on screen, while some canonically LGBTQ+ characters may be depicted as heterosexual in films.

Additionally, marketing strategies for movies vary significantly from those for comics, leading to further considerations before a product is released.

This raises the question: is the MCU’s Deadpool also an LGBTQ+ character? While the films haven’t explicitly confirmed this—especially since he is in a relationship with Vanessa—there have been several hints suggesting he is indeed an LGBTQ+ character in the movies. An older interview with Ryan Reynolds for Variety also appears to support this idea, as you’ll see:

Deadpool is so feminine. At least in how I saw him. What love is to Deadpool may not be what love is to Batman or someone else. I think that could be played up more. He’s an outsider in every way, shape, and form. (…) The great thing about Deadpool is that we’re allowed to do things that other superhero movies don’t necessarily do, and that’s probably one of them.

It’s something that I’d love to see more of, certainly through Wade, certainly through this universe, because it’s something that we’re building out more. We have a lot of tools in the shed that we get to play with.
