HBO Max’s Peacemaker series not only introduced numerous comic book characters—such as Vigilante, Judomaster, and Kite Man—to the broader DCU canon, but it also served as James Gunn’s spin-off sequel to The Suicide Squad.
The show featured original characters not seen in the comic books and was well-received. We know that Gunn and John Cena are currently preparing for the highly anticipated second season.
Since Peacemaker is set within the DCU, there’s a direct link between the series and the events depicted in the films. Consequently, Peacemaker’s killing of Rick Flag Jr. in The Suicide Squad is considered canon, and this will likely be a significant theme in the upcoming season.
We previously reported that Frank Grillo, who will portray Flag’s father, Rick Flag Sr., confronted John Cena’s character. Now, we can confirm that Joel Kinnaman, the actor who played Flag Jr., has also addressed the possibility of appearing in Peacemaker Season 2.
As you know, Peacemaker killed Rick Flag Jr. in The Suicide Squad during a mission to keep sensitive data secret. From the teasers, it appears that Rick Flag Sr. will be coming to the series to avenge his son and confront Cena’s Peacemaker.
While this storyline is intriguing, it’s clear that Flag Jr. will still play a significant role in the season, despite being officially dead.
The series could utilize flashback scenes to bring back the character. Recently, ScreenRant asked Joel Kinnaman about the possibility of his appearance in the series.
This inquiry was sparked by series director Peter Sollett tagging Kinnaman in a post celebrating the completion of filming for Season 2, which fueled speculation about Kinnaman’s potential involvement. Here’s what the actor had to say:
I don’t know what to say. That’s ridiculous. I would never. I would never be on a show like that. It’s not what I do. It’s not what I do.

That’s a pretty harsh statement, isn’t it? There are two possibilities, and one seems more likely than the other.
First, Kinnaman could genuinely dislike his role and the show, making this reply sincere. If that’s the case, we likely won’t see him in any future DCU projects. However, this scenario seems unlikely. While it’s not impossible, such comments usually lack sincerity when taken out of context, and this one appears to be just that.
The second possibility is that Kinnaman will indeed appear in Season 2 of Peacemaker but isn’t permitted to disclose it. His harsh comment might be a tactic to divert attention from the truth.
In our view, as well as that of many commentators online, this seems like the more plausible outcome. But only time will tell.
