Halle Berry Addresses Fox’s Controversial Tactics to Secure Her Role as Storm

Halle Berry is undeniably one of the biggest movie stars of all time. While she may have starred as Catwoman in a less-than-stellar film, her career boasts major highlights, including her Academy Award-winning performance in Monster’s Ball (2001), her portrayal of Storm in four X-Men films (2000–2014), a memorable role as a henchwoman in Swordfish (2001), and as Bond girl Jinx in Die Another Day (2002).

Additionally, she has had significant roles in Perfect Stranger (2007), Cloud Atlas (2012), The Call (2013), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019).

Berry has showcased her remarkable versatility throughout her career by taking on diverse projects. Nevertheless, her portrayal of Storm has left a lasting impression, and fans continue to adore her interpretation of the character.

Amid ongoing speculation about her potential return as Storm in the upcoming Avengers films, the actress recently shared her thoughts on an intriguing revelation from X-Men director Matthew Vaughn, who discussed the “shady tactics” they employed to bring her back for The Last Stand.

Halle Berry portrayed Storm in four films, including the original X-Men trilogy and the successful X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Although her performances are iconic, it has now come to light that she wasn’t initially keen on returning for each installment. In fact, Fox had to put in considerable effort to bring her back for X-Men: The Last Stand, as revealed by director Matthew Vaughn.

Hollywood is really political and odd. I went into an executive’s office, and I saw a script that was a lot fatter. I was like, ‘What the hell’s this draft?’ They said, ‘Don’t worry about it. (…) That’s a pretty cool idea.

So I was like, what’s this? They said it was the Halle Berry script. ‘She hasn’t signed on yet, but this is what she wants it to be. So once she signs on, we’ll throw it in the bin.’ I said, ‘Wow, you’re going to do that to an Oscar-winning actress? I’m out of here.’ So I quit at that point. I figured I was mincemeat.

As you can see, WB created a fabricated script featuring Storm rescuing dehydrated children in Africa during a rainstorm. This was the type of storyline Halle Berry was interested in, so they used this misleading narrative to entice her into signing on, a tactic that Vaughn disapproved of.

While Berry ultimately reprised her role as Storm in The Last Stand, she responded to Vaughn’s comments with a statement on her Instagram account.

If you’re having trouble accessing the link, here’s what she said:

Ya just never know the shady shit going on behind ya back! Thank you Matthew Vaughn for bringing the dark to light 🕯️

We agree this is pretty unpleasant, and it’s not surprising that Fox felt the need to completely overhaul the story at one point given their use of such tactics.
