The Real Reason Why Marvel Chose to Drop Kang Instead of Recasting Him Allegedly Revealed

Kang the Conqueror played by Jonathan Majors was supposed to be the next big villain of the MCU, replacing Thanos. Majors played the role of Kang (and his variants) in 2 seasons of ‘Loki’ and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.’

Following the release of the movie, Majors got into legal trouble. He was accused by his former romantic partner Grace Jabbari of assaulting her and harassing her. Subsequent insiders who previously worked with Majors confirmed that the actor has a history of troubling behavior on sets.

While the legal drama was unfolding, Majors was fired by his talent agency and dropped from commercials and upcoming projects. Marvel Studios however waited to see what the legal verdict would be. Disney presumably wanted to avoid the reprisal of the whole mess that happened with Johnny Depp.

Close to a year ago, the verdict came, Majors was guilty and was sentenced to probation with community service. At that point, we knew that he was not going to come back to the role, but part of the fandom was still hoping that Kang’s story would continue.

Fast forward to SDCC which took place a couple of months ago. Marvel Studios announced that ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’ is now called ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU but this time as Doctor Doom.

Part of the fandom was absolutely furious, and not everyone was glad to see RDJ back, and back as Doom. The fans who got invested in Kang’s storyline were wondering why the villain simply wasn’t recast.

After all, the deal with Kang is the fact that he has thousands of variants across the Multiverse, nothing states that these variants have to be identical. In fact, recasting Kang would be the easiest thing in the MCU.

But, as we’ve speculated before, Majors’ legal troubles were not the only thing that forced the Studio to scrap the villain, it was also the fact that he was bad – or rather the public perceived him as a bad and uninteresting villain.

‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ bombed at the box office, and it was overall a bad movie. The majority of the fans were disappointed that Kang was dispatched at the end by Ant-Man alone.

The confidence that Kang would be able to ignite the same amount of excitement as Thanos was pretty much non-existent. Even before Majors’ verdict came, the studio was reportedly re-considering introducing another villain, the one to replace Kang.

This is something that Daniel Richtman, a notable industry insider recently confirmed:

What Richtman is saying makes absolute sense. Even before we started thinking about Downey’s Doom in more detail, fans were calling it a “gimmick” casting, knowing damn well that far better actors are out there to play him.

In any case, even if Majors was found to be innocent, there is a very real possibility that he would be replaced as the main villain and downgraded to simply ‘Loki’ and ‘Ant-Man’ villain.
