Star Wars Finally Reveals How Kylo Ren Acquired Darth Vader’s Iconic Mask

Adam Driver has taken on many diverse roles in films such as Lincoln (2012), Frances Ha (2012), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), BlacKkKlansman (2018), Marriage Story (2019), The Last Duel (2021), House of Gucci (2021), and Ferrari (2023). However, for mainstream fans, his portrayal of Kylo Ren, or Ben Solo, in the Star Wars franchise remains his most iconic role.

While the Sequel Trilogy had its share of clumsy moments, Driver’s performance stood out, and Kylo Ren is still regarded as one of the most significant characters in the trilogy. This lasting impact explains why discussions about Kylo Ren persist.

One key aspect of Kylo’s character in the films was his connection to Darth Vader, a relationship that was largely left unexplored. However, a recent Star Wars story has finally delved deeper into the origins of this connection, shedding light on the mysterious bond between Kylo and Vader.

In short, Kylo Ren had an obsession with Darth Vader and sought to honor his grandfather’s legacy. While this is tied to Kylo’s larger journey to the Dark Side, Vader was a key figure in his life, and Kylo often spoke to the charred remains of Vader’s mask. But that’s where things get tricky.

At the end of Return of the Jedi, Vader removed his mask before his death, and its whereabouts were never fully explained in the original trilogy. This wasn’t a focus for George Lucas at the time, as he had different plans for the Sequel Trilogy than what Disney ultimately pursued.

However, Disney chose to revisit Vader’s legacy, making the mask a significant plot point. This led to the burning question: how did Kylo Ren come into possession of Vader’s mask in the first place?

While the movies never explained how Kylo Ren acquired Darth Vader’s mask, the answer was recently revealed in the comic Star Wars: Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising #1. After Vader’s death, Luke tells Leia the truth about their father, and understandably, Leia is furious and needs time to come to terms with it.

In one scene, she finds Vader’s charred mask, hesitates, but eventually picks it up. Speaking to the mask, she expresses her anger over the pain and destruction Vader caused, saying, “All I feel is anger – over all the things you did. The people you hurt… The people you left behind. I’m going to set that aside for now.”

Leia eventually throws the mask away, and it’s later discovered by an unknown individual, likely a scavenger, which explains how it eventually ends up with Kylo Ren. While it may not be a full explanation, it’s more than we had before this comic revelation, so it’s a step closer to understanding the mystery.
