Marvel Studios Marks International Lesbian Day with a Powerful MCU Tribute

Share:

International Lesbian Day is an annual celebration that takes place on October 8th and is dedicated to recognizing and honoring lesbians and their contributions to society, culture, and the LGBTQ+ community.

The day serves as an opportunity to promote visibility, acknowledge the unique experiences and challenges lesbians face, and celebrate their identity and love. In the last few years, the MCU has slowly but surely ramped up the visibility of certain demographics across its projects, so we’re not surprised at all that the studio decided to celebrate the day with an appropriate post.

The studio’s official X profile posted a photo of Agatha and Rio Plaza during their touching moment with green and purple hearts, the colors that represent their alignment with the elements, Rio being the Green (Earth) Witch, and Agatha being a Spirit Witch.

Even though lesbian relationships were hinted at in the MCU before, most recently in ‘The Marvels’ between Valkyrie and Carol Danvers, this is the first time that the viewers almost saw the kiss between two women.

Even before the show has aired both Hahn and Plaza hinted that there’s something more going on between Agatha and Rio Vidal. The subsequent episodes hinted that the two were likely in a romantic relationship at some point in the past but something tragic happened which left Rio with a permanent “Agatha-shaped scar.”

At first, the show was accused of “Queerbaiting” until that scene in episode 4 where all doubts about Rio’s and Agatha’s attraction were cast aside. The two witches embrace and almost share a kiss before changing their minds and realizing that it’s likely not a good idea.

It’s also been confirmed that Rio Vidal is a romantic antagonist to Agatha, so who knows what awaits us in the future! What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
