Official ‘Thunderbolts*’ Synopsis Released—It Sounds Like Deadpool Wrote It!

‘Thunderbolts*’ is undoubtedly one of the most highly anticipated upcoming projects in the MCU. The film is set to introduce a team akin to DC’s Suicide Squad, featuring former villains and anti-heroes who are presumably on a more redeeming path within the MCU.

Additionally, the movie will introduce Sentry, one of Marvel’s most powerful characters, portrayed by Lewis Pullman.

So far, not much is known about the plot of the movie, except that it’s going to gather former villains and anti-heroes. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus is going to be at the center of it all with her own, presumably shady, motives.

Walt Disney blog recently released an official synopsis for the movie, and it sounds suspiciously like it was written by Deadpool with plenty of tongue-in-cheek references and snappy self-degrading humor:

“Marvel Studios and a crew of indie veterans who sold out present Thunderbolts*, an irreverent team-up featuring depressed assassin Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) alongside the MCU’s least anticipated band of misfits.”

The “crew of indie veterans” is most likely a reference to Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan, who both have leading roles in independent films set for release in 2024: ‘We Live in Time’ and ‘The Apprentice,’ respectively.

It’s also something that Deadpool would say once he can leave indie productions behind and is ready to sign multi-million deals with Disney. The humor aimed at the corporate nature of Disney is also something we couldn’t miss in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.

But, back to the topic of ‘Thunderbolts*’ it seems that Marvel Studios is aiming toward a more humorous approach to the movie and the team. In his latest interview, David Harbour also teased that the MCU is now moving in a previously unseen direction:

I’m very proud of this movie, what we shot. I hear it’s playing well internally and I’m excited for people to see it. I think it’s going to really surprise people. I think people have seen from the trailer, from the shots. I think it’s a pretty cool direction of the MCU’s sort of making now. And I’m excited to be a part of that.

The Thunderbolts team features Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Hannah John-Kamen as the phasing Ghost; Wyatt Russell as the ex-Captain America, John Walker; and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, a Black Widow. Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, while David Harbour is Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian, and Olga Kurylenko is Taskmaster.

Laurence Fishburne and Rachel Weisz are also set to reprise their MCU roles, with Lewis Pullman taking on the role of Sentry. ‘Thunderbolts*’ is scheduled to be released on May 2, 2025, as the last film of Phase Five of the MCU.
