‘She-Hulk’ Star Tatiana Maslany Addresses Marvel Fans’ Sexism and Revisits Her Controversial Bob Iger Comments

While Tatiana Maslany has taken on many roles, her portrayal of She-Hulk is undoubtedly her most famous. The series was well-received by critics, and although it had its ups and downs, it didn’t deserve the overwhelming negativity it attracted.

Much of the backlash stemmed from certain so-called fans who were uncomfortable with a female lead and labeled the show as “woke” for its empowering portrayal of women. Unfortunately, this attitude is rooted in sexism, and it creates a toxic environment for those involved in the project.

In a recent interview, Maslany addressed the sexism she encountered while working on She-Hulk and revisited her past comments about Bob Iger, which may have impacted her future in the MCU.

She-Hulk was an intriguing series that blended social and political satire with classic superhero storytelling, offering proper ideals and values. It expanded the MCU, introducing a character who rightfully deserved screen time.

Although the show wasn’t perfect, with some moments that felt excessive, it was overall a fun, self-aware, and entertaining addition to the MCU, using humor and irony in smart ways.

However, despite praise from critics, a vocal group of online detractors—unworthy of the title “fans”—attacked the show and its star. Simply because they didn’t like a female-led series, labeling it “woke” as though that were negative.

We’ve previously pointed out the hypocrisy in how fans praise Deadpool for its similar tone but bash She-Hulk—an issue rooted in sexism. This double standard contributed to the online abuse Tatiana Maslany faced.

In a recent interview with The Independent, Maslany addressed this:

I think what’s exciting… [she checks herself] … exciting, ha. I think what’s fun about it is that [series creator] Jessica Gao built into the story that people were going to troll us. When we started to get the same responses that [Gao] had actually baked into the writing, it felt like part of the fun.

Being insulted is never easy, especially when the attacks are rooted in sexism. However, Tatiana Maslany has proven herself to be a true fighter.

She didn’t shy away from criticizing her former boss, Disney CEO Bob Iger, when he referred to the union demands during the SAG-AFTRA strike as “unrealistic,” calling him “completely out of touch.” Reflecting on that moment now, here’s what she has to say:

In those moments, you’re so heated up. It’s hard to articulate yourself in a way that you want when you’re on the picket line with everybody.

These remarks could potentially affect the chances of She-Hulk getting a second season, but whether Disney will hold it against Tatiana Maslany remains to be seen.
