Despite past setbacks, Sony Pictures remains committed to making a Sinister Six film, originally planned during ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ era. Drew Goddard, known for ‘Cabin in the Woods,’ once wrote a script for the ambitious project.
His version would have brought together villains like Rhino, Green Goblin, Vulture, Doctor Octopus, Mysterio, and Kraven the Hunter to face Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, exploring themes of conflict and redemption.
In a 2021 Collider interview, Garfield reflected on the project:
“I had a few meetings, and it was really exciting. I love Drew’s unique and unconventional creative choices… it would’ve been cool.”
Although the MCU now features Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Sony continues building its Spider-Man Universe (SSU) with mixed success. While ‘Venom’ has performed well, others like ‘Morbius’ and ‘Madame Web’ have fallen short.
If upcoming films like ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter’ fail to meet expectations, the future of Sony’s cinematic universe could be in jeopardy.
Despite these obstacles, industry insider MTTSH reports that Sony is moving ahead with a new Sinister Six film. The appearance of Michael Keaton’s Vulture in the criticized post-credits scene of Morbius suggests that Sony has not abandoned the idea of a villain ensemble.
Additionally, Andrew Garfield’s return as Peter Parker in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and his confirmed role in future MCU projects create an opportunity to potentially revisit Goddard’s original concept, possibly with an updated lineup of villains.
This development offers a glimmer of hope for the Sinister Six to finally establish its presence within Sony’s evolving Spider-Man universe.
