Superman & Lois Star Lauds James Gunn Despite Rumors Linking Him to the Show’s Cancellation: “Whatever vision they have for DC is going to be great”

‘Superman & Lois’ is currently in its 4th and final season. It’s one of the most successful Arrowverse shows, despite not being directly part of the cinematic universe that CW was trying to build across more than a decade.

The show was originally supposed to last much longer, as Elizabeth Tulloch confirmed in her interview with ComicBook. Still, stuffed happened. CW was acquired by Nexstar which led to the cancellation of many shows.

The show’s fate hung in the balance until it was ultimately confirmed that the show’s 4th season would serve as its last. With severe budget cuts that limited the show’s cast and the number of episodes. Ultimately, at least the show has gotten an opportunity to wrap up its story. Something that fans have been grateful for.

But, besides Nexstar acquiring CW, there have also been rumors that James Gunn was involved in the decision to cancel ‘Superman & Lois.’ According to some insider reports, Gunn did not want to have a competing Superman product on the market and the show was axed.

In her most recent interview the star of the show Elizabeth Tulloch, talked about the cancellation and how sudden it was, how it affected the production but also how it affected their personal lives:

We were literally told it would probably be at least seven seasons. We were all, we’re just kind of getting settled — literally settled into Vancouver; my daughter was in school there! — but life happens, just like it does to Lois and Clark. I sort of know James Gunn and Peter Safran, and they’re both wonderful, and I am grateful that we had a fourth season to wrap things up for the fans.

That wasn’t just a given; I don’t take that for granted. I think that the cast and the crew and the writers really came together. There were a lot of obstacles this season, with these big budget cuts and not having as much of the cast available to us as we had in the past, and shooting far fewer days than we had in the past.

So having to do really make the show look like what it has looked like the previous three seasons, but in seven or eight days instead of ten or eleven, was very hard. I’m really proud of everybody’s work.

Tulloch stated that she trusts Gunn’s and Safran’s vision for the DCU, seemingly implying that their vision did not include ‘Superman & Lois’ as a part of DC’s TV lineup. Her comment about how she really means it also implies that Tulloch has reasons to be angry:

I understand why the fans are disappointed. I’m disappointed, too, that we’re not going longer. But I have a lot of respect for Peter Safran and James Gunn, and I trust that whatever vision they have for DC is going to be great. I really do.

I think James Gunn is an extraordinary director. I hope to work with him one day. And as a human being, I’ve met him and he’s extremely kind. And the same goes for Peter. I know him too. Very kind, very smart.

As you can see, it’s likely that the takeover was the main culprit in the show’s cancellation as CW has been hemorrhaging money for quite some time. Despite the show being popular with the fans, it couldn’t have had that many viewers.

Still, Gunn was likely asked what to do with ‘Superman & Lois,’ and there’s likely some truth to the fact that he doesn’t want to have competing products on the market.

And yes, we don’t know how to explain that he will have a competing Batman product on the market once his ‘The Brave and the Bold’ releases, and he is seemingly fine with it. It’s likely related to the fact that Reeves’ universe is popular and profitable, ‘The Penguin’ is one of the best shows on Max currently.

Even if he is bothered by Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga, it’s likely that he can’t do anything about it, as long as it brings the viewers in.

Lastly, Tulloch commented on the fandom and the amount of respect she has for the role:

People really have their favorites — their favorite Lois Lane and their favorite Clark Kent — and we were so warmly received. think part of why is, you could see the love that we had for these characters. I was just asked in an interview what I’m proudest of. I said, probably just the amount of respect I had for the character.

I went into it knowing, this is a very beloved, iconic character in the comic books — and also live, live action. People love Margot Kidder or whatnot — so I have to really understand and respect why that love is so intense and bring it.
