Following ‘Batman: Resurrection,’ John Jackson Miller to Extend Burton’s Batman Saga with ‘Batman: Revolution’

Tim Burton’s Batman films are still widely regarded as groundbreaking and have significantly shaped modern comic book movies.

Although Burton directed only two films—Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992)—before being replaced by Joel Schumacher due to creative differences with the studio, his influence endures. Fans continue to celebrate Burton’s Batman movies as cinematic masterpieces.

Recently, that legacy was expanded with the release of Batman: Resurrection, a novel set between Burton’s two films. Written by New York Times bestselling author John Jackson Miller, the book serves as a direct sequel to the 1989 movie, continuing the story of Michael Keaton’s Batman.

If you thought that was the last we’d see of Burton’s Batman universe, there’s more exciting news—Miller has confirmed he’s working on a follow-up novel, slated for release around this time next year!

John Jackson Miller is a familiar name to comic book and sci-fi fans, known for his contributions to major franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek, where he’s written novels that expand the lore of these iconic universes.

He’s also penned Star Wars comics. Batman: Resurrection marks his first venture into the world of franchised superheroes, and it’s clear he takes great pride in this project, as reflected in his recent post on X (formerly Twitter):

After The Joker’s death, Batman and Gotham City face a mysterious new threat in this direct sequel to Tim Burton’s iconic Batman.

Having told the people of Gotham City that they’d earned a rest from crime, Batman finds the forces of evil growing ever more organized—and orchestrated—by a sinister hand behind the scenes. But that’s not all! Miller has confirmed that he is currently working on a sequel to Resurrection, titled Batman: Revolution, which will also be set between Batman and Batman Returns. It is expected that this new novel may serve as an origin story for the Riddler.
