Venom: The Last Dance is set to release later this month, and fans are buzzing with excitement. This film marks the conclusion of the trilogy and appears to be Tom Hardy’s final performance as the character. It will also introduce Knull to the big screen, further heightening anticipation among fans.

Beyond the confirmed characters, there has been a lot of speculation online about potential unconfirmed appearances. Some of these characters are linked to the MCU, while others are tied to Sony’s earlier Spider-Man films, particularly those featuring Andrew Garfield.

Hardy mentioned that the SSU has its own Spider-Man, widely believed to be Garfield’s version, which would connect these two universes. Given that Rhys Ifans is set to appear in the film, some fans are wondering if he will reprise his role as Curt Connors, a.k.a. The Lizard, from Garfield’s movies. Director Kelly Marcel addressed this speculation and revealed the truth.

Rhys Ifans portrayed Curt Connors in The Amazing Spider-Man, where he battled Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man. He returned to the role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, although only through voice work, as his live-action scenes were archival footage.

Now, we know he will also appear in Venom: The Last Dance, and we’ve glimpsed his character—referred to simply as Martin—in a scene from the trailer.

While Martin appears to be a typical supporting character—a hippie that Eddie and Venom encounter on their journey—there’s a possibility he harbors a deeper secret. Since we know little about Martin, some fans speculate that he could be Curt Connors using an alias to conceal his true identity.

In a recent interview with IGN, director Kelly Marcel was asked about Ifans’ role, and here’s what she had to say:

IGN: The trailer also revealed that Rhys Ifans is in the movie. Given that he’s already starred in past Spider-Man films as Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard, can you say whether he’s playing an entirely different character here?

Marcel: It’s not uncommon for actors to be cast as different Marvel characters across various films and this is no different. The best actors for the roles were cast and Rhys is no exception, he plays a new and different character in a really fun and important role and I am so excited for people’s reaction to his wonderful performance.

As it turns out, Ifans will not be appearing as Curt Connors in Venom: The Last Dance, which marks another missed opportunity to link Venom to the Spider-Man movies. However, it was an intriguing theory!
