DC’s Latest Hit Series Showed Us What We Lost With Cancelled ‘Batman’ Spinoff

While Gunn is busy building up his DCU from the ground, Matt Reeves is also building his own cinematic universe focused on Batman. Dubbed ‘The Batman Epic Crime Saga’ this cinematic universe explores the Caped Crusader and his role from a more grounded perspective.

The universe started with the release of ‘The Batman: Part I’ starring Robert Pattinson, and there’s a sequel in the works, bound for a 2026 release.

But besides the movies, some spinoff shows were also planned. ‘The Penguin’ which is currently ongoing, turned out to be a massive hit among audiences especially the show’s fourth episode titled “Cent’Anni.”

“Cent’Anni” sees Sofia Falcone’s (Cristin Milioti) backstory. We know that over the course of the series she was held in Arkham Asylum due to being ‘The Hangman’ psychopathic serial killer, but the episode showcases that she wasn’t guilty of these crimes. Sofia Falcone was set up by her own family when she started figuring out that her father actually killed her mother and made it look like suicide by hanging.

Carmine killed several young women, and since most of them died the same way, and could be brought to connection with Carmine, it’s quite obvious that he was the Hangman all along.

Sofia spent 10 years in Arkham Asylum, and the place depicted in the show was gruesome. Both with the abusive staff and abusive inmates including the regular drugs. Arkham Asylum was enough to break Sofia Falcone, and now she truly is a psychopathic killer without a shred of remorse.

The episode also showed us what the ‘Arkham Asylum’ planned spinoff would look like if it wasn’t canceled, just a few months before ‘The Penguin’ premiere. And our first look at Reeves’ take on it has been phenomenal.

Originally set within Matt Reeves’ universe, the show was to be written and showrun by Antonio Campos. However, Campos’ version will not move forward, though there is potential for a new project centered on Gotham’s infamous asylum in the future, more closely connected to Gunn’s DCU.

The show had a weird development journey, initially announced in July 2020 with a focus on Gotham PD, led by Terrence Winter, who left due to creative differences. Joe Barton then took over but was also eventually dropped.

Reeves later indicated that the Gotham PD show evolved into the ‘Arkham Asylum’ concept, described as a “horror movie” set in the asylum. Following the takeover of DC Studios by James Gunn and Peter Safran, it was clarified that the series was meant to fit into the new DCU rather than Reeves’ universe.

Despite the cancellation of this show, Reeves stated a few weeks back that other spinoffs are in development.
