Since Sony began adapting Spider-Man from the comics, three actors have taken on the role in live-action: Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland. Maguire and Holland both starred in three films, but Garfield only appeared in two, which is surprising given his popularity with fans.

While Garfield’s two films hinted at a brighter future for his character, many felt his story was left incomplete. Although a direct sequel wasn’t necessary, fans believe Garfield had more to offer, and his cameo in the MCU only reinforced that desire, sparking widespread calls for his return in another film.

Garfield himself has been open about his willingness to reprise the role, but he’s been clear that it would depend on certain conditions—primarily the quality of the story. Recently, People magazine shed light on what exactly it would take for him to suit up as Spider-Man again.

Not long ago, as you might recall, we reported on Garfield’s interview with Esquire, where he shared that he would be open to returning as Spider-Man—but only if the project was exceptional. He emphasized that he’d only come back if the story was truly amazing.

It was really healing for me. For sure, I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and
odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into.

I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.

This is certainly relevant, as it confirms that despite his conditions, Garfield is still interested in returning to the role—great news for fans. Recently, People magazine followed up by asking the actor the same question, and he offered further insight into his thoughts on a potential comeback.

I think what it would take is a great idea, a great concept. Something that is surprising and odd and fun, joyful. It has to be worthwhile.

I think we had such a great time on that last one that you want to just go, “Okay. Leave it. It was great. It worked. It was a risk and it really, really worked.’

Garfield’s latest comments only reinforce what he’s said before, and there’s little more to add—except our hope that this plan comes to fruition soon, bringing Andrew Garfield back as Spider-Man to the excitement of fans everywhere.
