‘Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi’ will begin filming soon. The upcoming ‘Dawn of the Jedi’, a prequel set earlier than any other movie in the series, will be directed by James Mangold. The script is co-written by Mangold and Beau Willimon (known for Andor and House of Cards).
Mangold has been nominated for two Oscars: one for writing the 2017 film ‘Logan’ and another as a producer on ‘Ford v. Ferrari’, which was up for Best Picture. Mangold has also directed ‘The Wolverine’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.’
According to Empire magazine (via World of Reel and ScreenRant), ‘Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi’ is set to start filming soon. In an interview promoting his new Bob Dylan biopic, ‘A Complete Unknown’, starring Timothée Chalamet, Mangold mentioned that after wrapping up work on that project, which is already getting Oscar attention, he will begin shooting the new Star Wars movie. This means filming could possibly begin by the end of 2025.
‘Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi’ is a story set 25,000 years before ‘Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope’ and focuses on the discovery of the Force.
Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy haven’t released a Star Wars movie since 2019’s ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’ With Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s planned Rey movie currently “on hold,” their main focus right now is the success of the Disney+ show ‘The Mandalorian.’
That’s likely why they’ve decided to move forward with a ‘Mandalorian & Grogu’ movie, directed by Jon Favreau, which is scheduled to hit theaters on May 22, 2026.
Mangold’s movie seems to be next in line after ‘Mandalorian & Grogu,’ but there are six other Star Wars projects in development from directors like Obaid-Chinoy, Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau, Donald Glover, Shawn Levy, and Patty Jenkins. I wouldn’t expect any of these to start filming anytime soon, at least not until Mangold finishes his film next year.
