It seems that with ‘WandaVision’ spinoff, ‘Agatha All Along,’ the MCU continued its tradition of teasing Mephisto and not delivering on it. Back when ‘WandaVision’ was first released, in the first few episodes fans suspected that Mephisto will turn out to be the real villain of the show. This did not happen. As you’re likely aware by now, the real villain was Agatha Harkness whose spinoff show we will comment on today.
Mephisto’s name was mentioned in episode 3 of ‘Agatha All Along,’ by none other than Jennifer Kale canonical cousin of two Ghost Riders in the comics. As soon as the name was mentioned fans started speculating that Mephisto would be at the end of the Witches Road.
The real villain of ‘Agatha All Along’ turned out to be, well depending on how you look at it? Agatha? Death? Witches Road? Billy? In any case, if you’re wondering whether Mephisto showed up, he didn’t. There’s a perfectly good explanation of why.
The show was already crowded with new characters and new concepts. For starters, we have Wiccan, one more cosmic entity, and Jennifer Kale who is sure to play a bigger role in Midnight Sons.
The future for both Billy and Agatha was teased, and a whole different supernatural part of the MCU has just opened up. Mephisto would be wasted in ‘Agatha All Along,’ he wasn’t needed to add suspense or mystery or threatening ominous presence.
The second reason why Mephisto did not show up is beacuse he is heavily rumored to have a smaller role in the upcoming ‘Ironheart’ show. The show has been described as Riri Williams using tech to battle old and ancient magic. One villain extremely close to Mephisto – The Hood has also been confirmed to show up in the series.
Mephisto will reportedly be played by Sacha Baron Cohen. What’s interesting is that originally ‘Ironheart’ was supposed to be released before ‘Agatha All Along’ before shuffling and the SAG-AFTRA strike happened, so it’s possible that Mephisto was at one point part of the show but considering that he is supposed to debut in ‘Ironheart’ this had to be scrapped.
In any case, back when ‘Agatha All Along’ first started airing, Jac Schaeffer explained what Mephisto’s deal in the show would be:
With these shows, so often there is something that is at once a joke and a wink and a nod, and actually has something legitimate underneath it. As we all know, Mephisto is a character who’s very wrapped into Agatha’s storyline. I mean, people have to watch, but we’re always playing with the audience in that way.
Mephisto was teased to keep us watching, but ultimately we stayed and realized we don’t need Mephisto in ‘Agatha All Along’ the show carried itself without the need for further “big bads.”
