When it comes to iconic franchises from the 1980s, few can rival Star Wars and Indiana Jones. While Star Wars technically began in the 1970s, its popularity surged during the ’80s alongside Indiana Jones, which debuted in 1981. Despite their seemingly different worlds, both franchises captivated global audiences and continue to thrive.
One obvious link between the two is Harrison Ford, who starred in both. But there’s another, deeper connection: the friendship between Star Wars creator George Lucas and Indiana Jones director Steven Spielberg. Lucas not only pitched the idea of Indiana Jones to Spielberg but collaborated closely on both projects, creating a shared creative vision between the franchises.
Now, a fascinating theory suggests an even closer relationship: that Star Wars and Indiana Jones might actually exist in the same universe.
According to this theory, Indiana Jones takes place in the present-day version of the Star Wars galaxy, hinting at a hidden link that fans may have missed!
These two franchises share a rich, interconnected history, but there’s even more to discover. Remember the Yoda mask cameo in E.T. or the E.T.-like aliens spotted in the Galactic Senate in Star Wars? Fans have always loved these clever cross-references, and, surprisingly, Star Wars and Indiana Jones are packed with similar nods to each other—far more than just a single Easter egg!
Here’s a list of known connections (from various media, not just the films):
- In Raiders of the Lost Ark, R2-D2 and C-3PO make a hidden appearance as hieroglyphs when Indiana Jones discovers the Ark of the Covenant.
- In a non-canon Star Wars Tales comic (#19) titled “Into the Great Unknown” by W. Haden Blackman and Sean Murphy, Han Solo accidentally travels at lightspeed to Earth. Tragically, he is killed by Native Americans, and his body is discovered centuries later by Indiana Jones.
- The crystal skull in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is said to belong to an ancient alien worshiped by humans who built a temple around its spacecraft. This skull is also seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars (season 3, episode 22, “Wookiee Hunt”) in a Trandoshan trophy room filled with slain creatures.
- The aliens in Indiana Jones are referred to as “interdimensional beings” rather than extraterrestrials, as explained by Harold Oxley. He claims they didn’t travel through regular space but through “the space between spaces.” This concept resonates with Star Wars Rebels (season 4), where Ahsoka Tano encounters a similar interdimensional realm called the “World Between Worlds,” connecting significant moments through the Force.
These connections are intriguing! While the first is a fun Easter egg and the second isn’t considered canon, the third and fourth might carry more weight—especially the fourth. If we take this theory seriously, it suggests that the world of Indiana Jones could actually be the distant future of the Star Wars galaxy. This is how the author concludes their theory:
This theory hinges on the World Between World’s ability to connect two galaxies, even one as “far, far away” as the Milky Way. However, given that Ahsoka season 1 confirmed that the Force exists in other galaxies, it stands to reason that the World Between Worlds can access any time and place.
Combined with the more credible Indiana Jones easter eggs, like the crystal skull appearing in The Clone Wars, it seems plausible that these interdimensional beings could travel to Earth from the Star Wars galaxy.
