James Gunn’s and Peter Safran’s DCU will officially kick off with the release of ‘Creature Commandos’ scheduled for December 5, 2024. Although the pair has stated several times in the past that the true start of their revamped cinematic universe will be the release of ‘Superman’ scheduled for 2025.

Not much is known about the movie except for what we’ve seen via set leaks, but we do know that it’s going to feature a lot of characters, some that already have established live-action presence and some adapted for the first time.

When we’re talking about established live-action characters, the movie will naturally feature Lex Luthor who has been described by James Gunn as the main villain of the movie, which is not surprising in the least. The honor of portraying Luthor fell on Nicholas Hoult.

Hoult is a versatile English actor known for his roles in ‘About a Boy,’ ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ and the ‘X-Men’ series, where he played Beast. He has gained acclaim for his range, moving from a child star to an actor celebrated for both dramatic and comedic roles.

Hoult recently talked about his upcoming iconic role and had nothing but praise for the director James Gunn stating that he feels lucky he got to experience this:

Lex Luthor is such an iconic character. So to get to craft that with James Gunn who I think is such a singular voice and vision… I just feel lucky.

I think that James Gunn has had such a singular voice and vision, in terms of the movies he crafts, and that was what was so exciting to be on set. He and all his team around him are excited about creating with them.

That was something that was just infectious to be around. So I loved the experience, and I’m, as a fan, I’m just so excited to see what they’ve made. Beacuse I think it could be really special.

Hoult also commented on the fact that Peter Safran and James Gunn are re-inventing the DC cinematic Universe:

I think they are being very specific in terms of what they want to create and making sure they don’t start anything until they’re fully ready and know they’ve got the right story and the right people and they can do it right.

Beacuse they really care and they want to produce things of quality, and I think that’s all you need and then you’ll earn fans trust and people will enjoy hopefully what you’re making and then we, you know, hopefully more to to come.

This aligns with what Gunn stated in the past that the project will never enter production until the script is ready. The director also stated that just beacuse some projects were announced to be part of DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters doesn’t necessarily means they will be produced if the scripts turn out to be lacking.
