One of the most exciting aspects of ‘Agatha All Along’ was definitely the mystery behind Agatha’s son – Nicholas Scratch. Over the course of the show, we’ve developed several theories. Ranging from Agatha sacrificing him to acquire Darkhold to Mephisto fathering him in the first place.
The truth behind Nicholas ended up being much more straightforward and grounded. Agatha gave birth to a son who was supposed to die either during the birth itself or shortly after birth. She made a deal with Lady Death, to buy Nicky some time, she sacrificed numerous lives for her.
But, as Agatha put it, sometimes little boys just die. We know that Nicholas at one point figured out the cost of his life and decided not to sacrifice “a round” of witches to prolong it. He promised his mother that they would sacrifice them tomorrow fell asleep and died. Agatha has never forgiven Rio for taking him away, and she has never forgiven herself for not being able to save him.
Now one mystery that was never answered by the show is the identity of Nicholas’ father. Recently, showrunner Jac Schaeffer addressed this issue, and it’s going to make Agathario shippers very happy.
In a recent interview, ‘Agatha: All Along’ showrunner Jac Schaeffer hinted that Rio Vidal might be the father of Agatha’s child, suggesting that the casting choices were made with this in mind.
She expressed surprise at how passionate fans, or “shippers,” have become about this idea. Schaeffer also shared her hope that future MCU projects will explore more of the backstory between Agatha and Rio, especially considering the tragic nature of their relationship and the fact that Agatha didn’t need a man to conceive a witch’s child.
I will say [Laughs] that when we were casting sometimes we were like, ‘Does that kid look like Rio? Does that kid look like Aubrey Plaza?’ Fans and viewers, yes, are picking up on our brainwaves for sure.
I didn’t anticipate that the shippers would be so fervent. You never know how anything is going to land or if people are going to care. The amount of people that care is staggering to me. It’s my hope that in the MCU there’s more unpacking of the Agatha & Rio backstory.

This isn’t the first time Schaeffer referenced Rio as the potential father of Agatha’s child. In an earlier interview, she claimed that one of the ideas was definitely to have Lady Death “fathering” the child. However, the showrunner explained that the identity of the father was never ultimately revealed beacuse it has no bearing on the story, and she doesn’t know the identity herself:
So who is Nicky’s father?
That’s a story for another day, but ultimately for me, it’s irrelevant in this story.
Do you know who it is?
The truth is that even if I did have an answer, I don’t cover it in this property. So it is fodder for a story for another day, that I maybe don’t have control over.
You do have Agatha saying “I made you from scratch” to Nicky right after he’s born, which could mean so many things, like he was conjured or he’s an immaculate conception. Where did that line come from?
I came up with it, and [my co-writer] Laura Donney loved the line so much, she was like, “I feel like I could have written this,” but she said it in this lovely way of, “it is born of our work.” It’s my favorite line in the show, because I love the ambiguity of it. I welcome the interpretations.
For me, I believe it’s about the character of Agatha making something. Her power set is only about death and destruction. She can’t make anything. She doesn’t have chaos magic, like Billy and Wanda, and this is something that she made herself. It required no lying and no conning, and there’s something for her that is pure and beautiful about creation.
