Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was meant to mark Sam Raimi’s grand return to the world of comic book movies. While Raimi, known for The Evil Dead and the original Spider-Man trilogy, brought his signature style to the film, it didn’t quite live up to expectations as a “triumphant” comeback. The movie wasn’t bad, and the direction was solid, but it often felt messy and incoherent.

However, this article isn’t about critiquing the film—it’s about its lasting influence. Despite its flaws, the movie turned out to be significant for the future of the MCU. Even years after its release, fans continue to discuss its key moments.

One theory we’ve developed revolves around the possibility that the film set up the Multiversal Avengers. Given what we know about the upcoming third Doctor Strange movie, there’s a strong chance this group could make an appearance in the MCU’s future.

There are several key plot details from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that are crucial when discussing the future of the MCU. While many of these focus on Wanda, we’ve already covered those aspects in previous reports, so we won’t be diving into her storyline here. Similarly, Doctor Strange’s own arc isn’t the main focus of this discussion. Instead, we’ll be examining the important cameo appearances in the film.

Specifically, the “Multiverse of Madness” gave us a glimpse into alternate universes, showcasing different versions of familiar characters, such as Mr. Fantastic, Captain Marvel, and Professor X.

These characters were part of a group known as the Illuminati, but they were from a different universe, not the Earth-199999 timeline that represents the main MCU. This highlights just how deeply the film explored the Multiverse.

At the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Clea made her appearance, setting the stage for what will likely be the plot of Doctor Strange 3. We recently reported that Sam Raimi is set to return as the director for the film. While we don’t know much about the movie’s plot yet, it has been confirmed that Dormammu, played by Denzel Washington, will be the main villain.

So, what does this all mean? Could Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have teased the Multiversal Avengers? Let’s first explain who the Multiversal Avengers are. While the name hasn’t officially referred to a single group in the comics, it actually represents three different teams:

  1. New Avengers (A.I.M.) from Earth-616
  2. The Avengers founded by Avenger Prime related to God Quarry
  3. The “real” Multiversal Avengers, known simply as the Avengers

None of these groups were ever officially called the “Multiversal Avengers,” but they have been referred to as such by editors. The third group is the most fitting, as it consists of Avengers from various universes, similar to the second group. The New Avengers, while quite different, are still connected to the “Time Runs Out” storyline.

In the upcoming movie, Clea, Doctor Strange, and potentially members from other universes (as hinted by the Illuminati) could form the Multiversal Avengers, especially if the story ties into the Black Priests, given the current instability of the Multiverse. This is an intriguing theory, but recent developments regarding the movie’s plot complicate things.

It seems that Marvel won’t be diving too deep into the Multiverse in Doctor Strange 3. Instead, the focus will likely remain on Strange and Clea dealing with Dormammu, who isn’t directly tied to the potential storylines we’ve discussed.

We don’t expect many new characters to be introduced in this regard, and while the Multiversal Avengers could appear down the line, we don’t believe the movie has teased anything in that direction.

But we’d love to hear your thoughts. What do you think of this theory? Do you have any theories of your own? Share them in the comments below!
