Kelly Marie Tran has publicly shared that she is queer. The actress spoke about her role in the upcoming remake of Ang Lee’s queer romantic comedy The Wedding Banquet, the Star Wars actress opened up for the first time. “I haven’t said this publicly yet, but I’m a queer person,” Tran revealed.
Speaking about working with queer filmmaker Andrew Ahn on the remake, she said, “The thing that really excited me about it was I got to play a person that I felt like I knew. I don’t feel like I’m acting at all in this movie.“
“I’m here doing this amazing movie with these amazing people,” Kelly said. “I’ve never been in a queer space before. I’ve never truly felt this accepted before.”
Ahn’s remake stars Kelly Marie Tran as Angela, a woman trying to have a baby through IVF with her girlfriend Lee, played by Oscar-nominated actress Lily Gladstone. Living in their guest house are their close friends Chris (Bowen Yang) and his partner Min (Han Gi-chan).
Min, feeling pressure to return to Korea to take over his family’s business, comes up with a plan with Angela: a fake wedding. The idea is to help him get a green card while Angela raises money for IVF—all while keeping Min’s traditional family happy.
The cast also features Minari Oscar winner Yuh-Jung Youn as Min’s grandmother and Joan Chen as Angela’s mom. Tran shared that her personal experience coming out to her mother was reflected in her scenes with Joan Chen. “I came out to my mom in a very specific way. The scenes I have with Joan Chen are very similar to that experience,” Tran said.
Tran has been vocal about LGBTQ+ representation in the past. She previously said she believes her character in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon is queer and would be thrilled to do a queer sequel. In 2021, she told Vanity Fair, “If you watch this movie and see representation that feels real to you, then it is real and authentic. I might get in trouble for saying that, but whatever.”
