Is it true? Can the rumors be trusted? Is Marvel Studios actually developing a Dark Avengers movie?
If it’s true, the Dark Avengers will be a great addition to an already impressive set of rumored movies. Captain Britain. Nova. A-Force. The Thunderbolts. However, before we read too much into it, remember, this is only a rumor.
If the Dark Avengers movie rumor was true and it went into production, Marvel would be smart to take a page out of the Sony book of comic movies.
Let me explain
Sony recently released Venom, and as much as it is being panned and criticized, it is a step in the right direction. One of Marvel’s shortcomings has been their inability to develop their villains to anything past being a cardboard cutout. Don’t get me wrong, there have been exceptions to this (Hela, Kilmonger, and Zemo), but these exceptions are few and far between. The vast majority of Marvel villains (Kaecilius, Malekith, Whiplash,
A Dark Avengers movie may go a long way in fixing this. By doing a villains film, the studio has no choice but to create well-written and fleshed out characters. Think about it. The Dark Avengers are a group of villains who, in an effort to gain public affection, dress up as heroes and do “hero” things.
It’s as effective as it is simple.
In their highly successful run, the Dark Avengers were:
- Norman Osborn – Iron Patriot
- Moonstone – Ms. Marvel
- Mac Gargan – Spider-Man
- Bullseye – Hawkeye
- Daken – Wolverine
- Sentry
- Ares
- Venom – Spider-Man
These characters, these villains, give Marvel the unusual opportunity to step away from their norm. In a perfect world, Marvel will use this exact team in their movie.
And why?
Not only will it give them a chance to do what I’ve already mentioned, but it’ll also give them a chance to introduce an entire set of characters who have yet to make an appearance.
What are the Dark Avengers?
The Dark Avengers grouped together at the conclusion of the fan-favorite Secret Invasion story. Secret Invasion saw Norman Osborn appear to have stopped the Skrull Invasion. As a consequence, he immediately found fame and was assigned as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. At its helm, his first moves saw him convert S.H.I.E.L.D. to H.A.M.M.E.R. and create his own version of the Avengers.
What nobody knew was that his group consisted of a cast of dangerous villains.
Make no mistake, if Marvel does a Dark Avengers movie it will only spell success. The universe is in dire need of good villains and the Dark Avengers may just be what the Doctor ordered.
Cheers,
Joel
