Ferrari and Heat director Michael Mann has always kept quiet about his second movie, The Keep. This 1983 fantasy-horror film was heavily edited by the studio, which disrupted Mann’s unique, dreamlike approach to a story about Nazis seeking help from a Jewish historian to avoid destruction.
The movie stands out in Mann’s career, which is usually filled with neo-noir crime dramas about professionals. While The Keep has mostly faded into obscurity, it remains memorable for its daring style.
The studio’s cuts left the final act of the film almost impossible to follow, turning it into a confusing mix of scenes. Still, The Keep has earned a cult following over time and is now available in 4K UHD/Blu-ray for the first time, with a new Limited Edition Slipcase set from Vinegar Syndrome.
The story follows a group of Nazis who accidentally release a dark force called Radu Molasar after occupying an ancient Romanian fortress in 1941. Molasar manipulates a sickly Jewish historian, Theodore Cuza, into helping him break free, but this also stirs a mysterious, powerful stranger who sets out to face the unleashed evil.
When it first came out, The Keep got mixed reviews. Critics pointed out its confusing story but admired its striking visuals. It didn’t do well at the U.S. box office, but over time, it gained a loyal fanbase. Though it was released on home video, the film didn’t get a DVD release until 2020, when Australia’s Via Vision put out a remastered edition.
