Among Disney’s animated rogues gallery, the Queen of Hearts is easily recognized by her iconic red, black, and gold color scheme—as well as her motif of hearts and playing cards. Backed by her iconography, and catchphrase, “Off with their heads!”, she is one of the primary members of the Disney Villains franchise.
We first saw the character back in 1951 (voiced by Verna Felton) when she was the main antagonist of Disney’s animated film Alice in Wonderland. Almost 70 years later, we kinda saw the character again in the live-action Alice in Wonderland (2010), directed by Tim Burton.
Helena Bonham Carter played Iracebeth / Red Queen. She was an amalgamation of two Carroll characters: the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts.
Now, it seems that we are getting a Queen of Hearts origin story movie with Julia Hart writing and directing. Although not much is currently known, inside sources (Daniel Richtman) suggest that the project will not be connected to Disney’s other two live-action Alice in Wonderland films.
2010’s Alice in Wonderland was a massive hit worldwide. The movie grossed $334.1 million in North America and $691.2 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $1.025 billion against a budget of $200 million.
Worldwide, it is the second-highest-grossing film of 2010. It is the third-highest-grossing film starring Johnny Depp, the highest-grossing film directed by Tim Burton, and the second-highest-grossing film by Anne Hathaway.
It is also the 50th-highest-grossing film ever made. (subject to regular change.) Additionally, it is the second-highest-grossing children’s book adaptation (worldwide, as well as in North America and outside North America separately).
Considering these numbers, it’s not strange that Disney plans to move forward with another Alice in Wonderland movie.
