The world’s highest-paid actress in 2023 and three-time Oscar nominee, Margot Robbie, rose to stardom with her incredible portrayal of Naomi in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 hit The Wolf of Wall Street.
More than ten years after the movie came out, the actress shared what it was like to work with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. Looking back on her role as Naomi Lapaglia in the 2013 film, she talked about her memorable nude scene and an unexpected moment during her audition.
While talking about her experience with full nudity on set, Margot Robbie shared what scared her the most during her audition. She explained how she boldly changed the script and improvised a scene with Leonardo DiCaprio, admitting she was worried about possibly getting arrested.
Director Martin Scorsese offered her the option to wear a robe for comfort, but Margot revealed it was her decision to go fully nude in the iconic scene where her character, Naomi, seduces wealthy stockbroker Jordan Belfort.
That’s not what she would do in that scene. The whole point is that she’s going to come out completely naked—that’s the card she’s playing.
Margot Robbie shared how Martin Scorsese tried to make her feel at ease by suggesting partial nudity, but she decided to go fully nude instead. Reflecting on the iconic scene where her character, Naomi, seduces Jordan Belfort (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), Robbie also shared a story from her audition.
Robbie didn’t hold back, even with Hollywood legends like Scorsese and DiCaprio in the room. She revealed that during her final audition, instead of following the script and kissing DiCaprio, she made the bold choice to slap him.
I thought, I could kiss Leonardo DiCaprio right now, and that would be awesome. I can’t wait to tell all of my friends this. And then I thought… nah. And just walloped him in the face.
It was dead silence for what felt like an eternity but was probably three seconds. Then they just burst out laughing. Leo and Marty were laughing so hard, they said ‘that was great.’ I was thinking, I’m going to get arrested, I’m pretty sure that’s assault, battery.
‘Not only will you never work again, actually you will go to jail for this, you idiot. And also why did you have to hit him so hard? You should have done it lighter.’
Margot Robbie shared that she followed her instincts and improvised the scene, though she admitted being afraid it might lead to an arrest or lawsuit, as it felt like an assault. Despite her fears, both Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio praised her boldness, and she landed the role in the Oscar-nominated 2013 film.
