Hans Zimmer, a legendary composer, is known for creating some of the most memorable movie soundtracks. He has scored iconic films like The Lion King, Inception, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Dune, blending traditional and modern music. Zimmer’s innovative work has earned him numerous awards, including Oscars and Grammys.
However, the renowned composer will miss this year’s awards season as his score for Dune 2 has been disqualified from the Oscars and other ceremonies like the BAFTAs. The Academy ruled that Zimmer’s score reused too much music from the first film, exceeding the limit for old material allowed in a sequel’s soundtrack.
Hans Zimmer, who won an Oscar for scoring the 2021 film Dune, has been a fan of the novel since his teenage years. His decision to work on Dune over Tenet showed how deeply personal the project was for him. Even after completing the first movie, Zimmer continued crafting music for its sequel.
I never left the world of Dune. In fact, I think Denis [Villeneuve] thought I was quite mad, because I kept writing after we finished the first movie. But because I knew the story, I knew the book, I knew what was coming our way. And in fact, a lot of the main themes in this second movie were written at the end of the first film, before Denis started shooting. It felt important to carry on writing when we were still in the same spirit, the same frame of mind.
The Academy’s rules for Best Original Score require that most of the music be original, with only limited reuse of material from earlier works. While many fans praise the Dune 2 score for its fresh and innovative music, it exceeded the 20% reuse limit, resulting in disqualification.
This decision has reignited debates about whether the Academy’s rules are fair for sequel scores. Zimmer’s Dune 2 score has been celebrated as a masterpiece that blends new themes with powerful arrangements. Similar controversies, like Alan Silvestri’s disqualified Avengers: Endgame score, have led some to call for updated rules that reflect the challenges of scoring franchise films.
