Chris Evans is reportedly set to don the Captain America suit again in Avengers: Doomsday, although Marvel has not yet officially confirmed it. The news, first shared by The Wrap, has caught many by surprise, especially since Steve Rogers’ last appearance in Endgame seemed to mark the end of his journey as the First Avenger.
After Endgame, Steve was older, retired, and living a peaceful life—far from the battlefield. However, this return likely won’t undo his peaceful ending.
The key here is that Avengers: Doomsday is being directed by the Russo brothers, who wrapped up Steve’s story in a final and respectful way. They won’t want to undermine that, so the plan for bringing Steve back is most likely through the multiverse.
It’s likely that Evans will play a version of Captain America from a different universe. This alternate version could come from a reality where events unfolded differently, possibly with a much darker outcome.
Some theories suggest that this version of Steve might have died during the Chitauri invasion, which could have pushed Tony Stark down a darker path, ultimately turning him into the villain Doom. Another possibility is that this version of Tony was always evil and may have even been the one to kill Steve.
This storyline, especially involving the character of Doom, may not have been Marvel’s original plan. Initially, Avengers: Doomsday was set to focus on Kang as the main villain, but with those plans falling apart, Marvel has had to make some changes.
The film now needs to quickly establish Doom as a real threat, and using a flashback featuring this alternate version of Cap and Tony could help explain the stakes without taking up too much time. By including Steve in a brief but impactful flashback, Marvel can show how Doom’s world diverged from the main timeline.
Evans’ return will likely be limited to a short appearance, and he probably won’t play a major role in the movie. It’s more of a way to highlight what went wrong in this alternate universe. After all, Steve’s retirement in Endgame is a hard act to follow.
This could be a one-time appearance, leaving us to wonder if Steve will return for Secret Wars, which will likely have a very different storyline. For now, fans can expect a nostalgic cameo rather than a central role in the upcoming film.
